average weekly wage

by arora007 » Thu Jul 29, 2010 7:08 am
The average weekly wage nearly doubled in the 1970's, rising from $114 to $220, yet the average worker ended the decade with a decrease in what their pay may buy.

(A) with a decrease in what their pay may buy
(B) with what was a decrease in what they were able to buy
(C) having decreased that which they could buy
(D) decreasing in purchasing power
(E) with a decrease in purchasing power
OA is E,
somehow took some time to choose between D and E,
E should have been fairly simple... did not deserve 95 seconds
decreasing would be modifying the decade as a participle phrase, and thus incorrect.

Theory and Application:

1. Every pronoun MUST have clear antecedent.

=> Their in the option A and they in the option B and C don't have reference. So, they are out.

2. Noun + VerbING:

Here, VerbING modifies the noun.

Example:

The boys playing football are members of national team.

=> Decade decreasing=> means that the decade is decreasing. So, it is out.

Answer should be E.

Thanks for the good question.
