Can't decide between A and D. Can someone please explain in detail...

A = by turns "graceful and serene, violent and formidable, "....

Don't we need and in between these two things i.e.

"graceful and serene, and violent and formidable,

D has another issue....that is parallelism is not correct....

Originally developed by ancient Hawaiians -- This phrase is a modifier, which modifies surfing.

So, you can rule out B and C right away as they modify surfing's appeal and not surfing.

In E, their points to the people ("their unusual confluence.."), which changes the meaning of the sentence. The original sentence talks about the "sport's unusual confluence...". So, this is ruled out

In D, the first part is OK, but "a backdrop that is...and that" is awkward. The original is concise.

So, A wins.

Between A and D there is a slight change in meaning in D.

D) surfing appeals to people due to the sport’s unusual confluence of adrenaline, skill, and high paced maneuvering, a backdrop that is unpredictable and that is, by turns, gracefully and serenely violent and formidable, and the camaraderie that often develops

Here gracefully and serenly are modifying violent and formidable.
In the original sentence this is not the case.

due to in the gmat sense means "cause by" , doesn't it?

so, when it is a verb, the correct phrase should be Because of

John's failure is due to his negligence.
John failed because of his negligence.

Surfing appeals to people because of x
Surfing's appeal to people is due to

Originally developed by ancient Hawaiians, surfing appeals to people (caused by) the sport's unusual confluence of adrenaline, skill, and high paced maneuvering, an unpredictable backdrop that is, by turns, graceful and serene, violent and formidable, and the camaraderie that often develops among people in their common quest to conquer nature.

then this sentence is nonsensicle.

just as "The game is postponed due to rain" is incorrect.
The game's postponement is due to rain. correct

please correct me if i am wrong
i got utterly defeated by the gmat.
