SENTENCE CORRECTION

by poonam197 » Sun Jan 04, 2009 4:25 am
DOUBT 1 :

I'm not much of an athlete, but I like softball, soccer, and hockey/ to play hockey

The correct answer is to play hockey

WHY????

DOUBT 2:

Although most large asset management firms can afford to run their own information technology operations, some smaller firms are discovering that the cost associated with maintaining an information technology staff and from continuously upgrading hardware and software are larger than they initially estimated.

EXPLANATION:
The subject (cost, which is singular) and verb (are, which is plural) do not agree. Since multiple costs are being discussed and the verb, which appears outside the underlined part of the sentence, is plural, the subject needs to be plural as well.

Can someone explan the mismatch between the subject 'cost' and the verb 'are'.

Hi Poonam,

For your doubt#2,

"Cost" is singular.

"Costs" is plural.

For e.g. IMO both the following are correct:

1. Costs associated are prohibitive.
2. Cost associated is prohibitive.

since in the sentence it is already given "are"...so we have to choose "costs".

Hope this helps.

Mohit

DOUBT 1:
Not very sure, however I think the correct use of like is 'like to'. I like hockey does not really convey what I like about it. I like to watch cricket makes sense.

Doubt one is softball, soccer and hockey.

You don't need to write the verb (play) as it would have been correct to do so at the beginning.

The sentence is a list, the verb which connects these words should always come first. i.e. (shopping) list, (aims and objectives) list, (sports) list. It's bad English to tell the reader the substance of the list after the list starts which is why it's wrong to write 'to play hockey'.

That's what I remember from school! Am I correct?
