Final Week before GMATs -- HELP!

by hahsakaa » Tue Apr 17, 2012 10:58 am
Hey Forum,

I am taking the GMAT in 8 days (April 25th). I have had wild swings during the first few practice tests, however I think I'm finding a range. I am content with anything 700 or higher. I took the Manhattan GMAT course (first 4 practice tests). I had a terrible timing problem on Quant, but I think I'm getting that under control (only had to guess on last two on the most recent test). Verbal I have been ending with more than 5 minutes to spare, consistently (I just get nervous that I'll run out of time I guess).

My question to you guys, is what should I do before my test. I am planning on one more practice test Saturday (4 days before test). I still haven't taken a test with essays, so I am practicing 1 essay a day until test day. I have flash cards (mahattan and beat the gmat). Asides from those items, what else should I do prior to my test? I am really nervous becuase I am right near my target score. I am afraid of test day jitters pulling me below the edge that I'm so delicately walking on (700).

Scores
Cat # Quant Score Quant Percentile Verbal Score Verbal Percentile Total Score Total Percentile
1 44 73 38 85 680 90
2 40 61 34 72 610 73
3 42 66 45 99 710 94
4 47 81 38 85 700 93
Official Prep 48 80 38 83 710 92

Any advice would be appreciated!

p.s. sorry for the rambling-nature of the post.

As far as test day jitters go, this link may have some helpful advice: https://www.veritasprep.com/blog/2011/04 ... y-anxiety/

I would be careful not to overdo your final preparation. It's more important to go into the exam mentally fresh rather than to cram as much information as possible into your head. As I'm sure you've noticed, the GMAT rewards the perceptive student, and it's much easier to notice the little tricks and traps if you're not mentally fatigued going into it.

Taking a final practice test on Saturday is a good idea. Sunday and Monday can be used to go over any areas that are still giving you trouble. Review your flash cards, work some problems, etc. I would avoid doing anything too strenuous the day before the test if possible. Relax, hang out with friends...just get your mind off the GMAT!

Thanks for your advice. Just took the test yesterday. I was incredibly concerned with timing going in to the test. However, towards the end of quant, I was ahead of pace by 8 minutes. And towards the end of verbal, i was ahead of pace by 12 minutes. I think my hastiness through verbal cost me, however I scored the best i ever have on the Quant. The higest I've scored on practice exams was a 710, so I dont think i'll be taking the exam again, I'm comfortable with scoring in my ideal score range.

Q: 49
V: 36
Overall Score: 700
Overall Percentile: 90
