Didn't get any feedback in the actual SC forum...

Can someone give a detailed explanation for when to use Instead of VS Rather than???

Can you give an example? Instead of is used far more frequently than rather than. For the most part, they mean the same thing.

I'd prefer to go skiing rather than go snowboarding.
I'd prefer to go skiing instead of snowboarding.

I think rather than is used more in written English and instead of more in speech. I'm not sure what kind of answer you're looking for, but I hope that helps.
