was it a mistake to have canceled?

by abcdefg » Wed Jul 22, 2009 12:40 pm
Yesterday I took the GMAT and ended up canceling. From my gmatprep and manhattan gmat practice exams, I was scoring in the 680-700 range. I retook some gmatprep practice exams over and scored 750-760 on them but of course they're inflated because some questions were repeats. On the practice exams, my breakdown was usually around 44Q and 39V but on the good days it was as high at 50Q and 44V.

When I was looking through the my old practice exams I noticed that most of my mistakes were careless mistakes so I decided to be extra careful today by double checking everything (I think this was what really killed me). As a result I ran out of time on both sections. I usually finish right on time for math and have around 7-10 minutes to spare on verbal. But yesterday I had to guess on the last 3-4 questions on math and had around 20 minutes left to finish 20 Qs on verbal (down to around 9Qs with 7 minutes remaining). So the last 10 questions on verbal I just guessed without even reading.

So time was what really killed me yesterday. Because the schools that I want to apply to generally require 700+, I decided to cancel. However upon reading experts here say not to cancel, I feel even worst than I did yesterday. Now I'm wondering if I did the right thing by canceling.

You probably did the right thing but you'll never know so no need to dwell on it. Just schedule a retake once you feel more secure.

At first I was going to say never cancel, but seeing your time remaining for verbal - wow! You probably should have cancelled given that you had so many verbal questions you were guessing at.

Practice your pacing! Test like you study, and study like you test! Don't change strategies going into the test! Work on them before you walk in so you know what they will do to your performance.

Shake it off, and reschedule.

Why did you start double checking your answers? One or two small mistakes won't kill you, but not answering 4 or 5 questions at the end of each section will definitely doom you!

Just be confident with your ability and move forward. You will do fine next time.

Good luck!

I agree with wgrau. Guessing the last 10 in verbal statistically means you would have got 2 correct and 8 wrong. On verbal that WILL kill you. Worse, if you got string of questions wrong that would really kill you. So cancelling was porbably a good idea.
