Need advice

by sarah_n78 » Wed Sep 23, 2009 9:45 am
Hello,

Here my background.

1) I have got Bachelors degree in Comp Sci(GPA 3.0) and Master's degree Comp Sci(GPA 3.3) from India.
2) I have 5.8 years of work exp, out of which I have spent 2.5 years in the US.
3) Good community work experience.

I scored poorly in the GMAT (460). I'm planning to take it again. I'm targetting the following schools:

1) Yale SOM
2) NYU Stern
3) Tufts (International Business program)
4) CMU Tepper

What is the safest GMAT score that I should have in order to get an offer of admission from one of the above mentioned schools ?

Also, what do you think my strategy should be in order to score high in the GMAT ?

Thank you.

Hi and thanks for your question.

I'm afraid that there is no single answer to your question. There is no "safe score" since, as you probably know, there are lots and lots of factors that go into an admissions committee's decision.

But...to answer your question: to be competitive at the programs that you mention below, I think you would need a minimum of 650, and possibly even higher since your GPA is not particularly strong in either grad or undergrad.

A few other notes:

Given your computer science background, I would imagine that you should be able to fairly well on the GMAT. Many times, people with strong quant backgrounds do not do well b/c they are not familiar with what I call the "core knowledge" --the triangle ration, the standard formulas, etc., etc. Similarly, some basic knowledge of question types and strategy is often very helpful.
Keep me in the loop about your thinking and let me know if you have any more questions.
