Need advice on this badly!

by target_mba2010 » Sat Sep 26, 2009 10:45 am
Hi,
I have given my first attempt of GMAT last week and scored a disappointing 590(Q 42,V 29).
A brief of my profile-
I am an Indian male Techie with 2 yrs of work experience in India's leading software firm.I have a GPA of 2.4(out of 4) of my undergraduate engineering degree.I have a limited extra curricular achievements to show on my resume which includes supporting a NGO financially.
I am interested in pursuing MBA in marketing/communications/advertising.
I am planning for a second attempt of GMAT in next 2 months time. Before that, need some clarifications about the following queries:
1. What are my chances of getting into a descent B school in US with the above profile and an improved GMAT score?
2. If point 1 is valid, what should be the minimum score I should be looking for? If it isnt, what are options that I have in the present scenario with the score of 590?
Any thoughts are highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi and thanks for your note. To answer your questions in turn:
1. What are my chances of getting into a descent B school in US with the above profile and an improved GMAT score?
Well...that kind of depends on what you mean by decent and what an improved GMAT score looks like. If you mean a top-twenty school and a GMAT of at least 700 then I would say that you should be in the running, as long as:

- You can explain why a tech guy wants to go into "soft" fields like advertising, etc. (You may also want to get clear on what an MBA prepares you to do: there are no MBAs that I know about in "communications" or "advertising." There are MBAs in marketing and they include communications and advertising but you need to get clear on your language.)

- You can explain your GPA.

2. If point 1 is valid, what should be the minimum score I should be looking for? If it isnt, what are options that I have in the present scenario with the score of 590?
Again, depends on what you mean by decent. I would have to say, though, that with a 590 your options are going to be pretty limited barring something really extraordinary in your background.
Keep me in the loop about your thinking and let me know if you have any more questions.
