(1,000 000 00 - 100) /(1,000 000 0 - 1,000)

When I pulled out the 10^2, I got (10^6 - 1)/(10^5 - 10), which I could not manipulate to one of the answers. I guess at that point you can kind of eyeball it and see that the -1 and the 10 are insignificant, so 10^6/10^5 will give you 10. Is there a better way? Can someone explain?

I don't get what part of the answer is not clear... with simple math operations you can get the answer... Subtract and divide by heart and you will see that 10e2 is the closest.

10e3= 1,000

sorry, it was lapsus calami, I meant 10e1 too, but I wrote wrong exponent. From my previous post it is obviously 10e1 the result. Sorry.

The value of (10^8 - 10^2)/(10^7 - 10^3)is closest to which of the following?

(10^8 - 10^2)/(10^7 - 10^3) = 10^2(10^6 - 1)/10^3(10^4 - 1)

as we are interested in calculating closest value not exact value..
we can neglect 1 (10^6 - 1 is approx equal to 10 ^6)
similarly 10^4 -1
now we have,
(10^2*10^6)/(10^3*10^4) = 10^8/10^7
=10
