GMAT Prep : Percentages (HARD)

by nandy1984 » Tue Mar 27, 2012 9:25 pm
What fraction of this year's graduating students at a certain college are males?

1) Of this year's graduating students, 33% of the males and the 20% of the females transferred from another college.

2) Of this year's graduating students, 25% transferred from another college.

Please help in solving this..... I am confused where to start.....

Let m is the number of male students graduating and f is the number of female students graduating.

(1) Of this year's graduating students, 33% of the males and the 20% of the females transferred from another college.
0.33 m and 0.20f are transferred from another college but this is not enough to find the values of m and f; NOT sufficient.

(2) Of this year's graduating students, 25% transferred from another college implies 25% of (m + f) = 0.25(m + f) are transferred from another college.
Again this is not enough to find the values of m and f
; NOT sufficient.

Combining (1) and (2), 0.33 m + 0.20f = 0.25(m + f)
0.33 m + 0.20f = 0.25m + 0.25f, which can be solved further to find the value of m/f; SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is C.

Thank you for the explanation... we need to find here the ratio m/(m+f) right... I know if we know the m/f we can find this... i am trying to understand the problem... In the question he says "CERTAIN COLLEGE" and in the options he says " ANOTHER COLLEGE" ... this bothered me while i started reading this question....
