You are very right! The OG doesn't always have the best method. There are usually many methods to solve problems. If you don't like the explanation from the OG, search the forum. You will most likely find an alternative method and perhaps a better one.

I would change "doesn't always" to "almost never" - its really annoying!

The Graduate Management Admissions Council is not in the business of teaching-they ARE, however in the business of administering a computer-based standardized test. (and pocketing 250 of your hard-earned dollars in exchange for the opportunity to take it!)

It is not surprising, then, that their "official guide" is a little thin on the explanations. Their only objective in writing an explanation to a question is to prove that the question CAN be solved. Anything else would require the services of teachers (who need to be paid), and more printed paper (which also costs money).

John I would agree with you if the book was included with the exam fees. However, the book is purchased separately and costs around the same as any other GMAT book. You buy the book to study for the test so you expect the book to teach you what you need to know. They are in the business of administering the test but also in the business of selling the study guide! It is simply the case that they enjoy a monopoly on selling actual past questions which lets them get away with weak answer explanations and still guarantee good sales of their book.

OP - you 're right sometimes the OG explanations leave me quite frustrated especially MATH!

I don't really care why their explainations are not the best but where I can find the better ways to solve questions. I think this forum has most of them.
