(1) Distance between cities A and C = 50 miles
Distance between cities B and C = 30 miles
Drawing a figure makes it clear.

Image

If we take the first case, then distance between cities A and B = 50 - 30 = 20 miles
If we take a look at the 2nd figure, the distance between cities A and B = 50 + 30 = 80 miles
No definite answer; NOT sufficient.

(2) City A is 10 more miles far from city C as it is from city B.
Let the distance between cities A and B = x miles
Then distance between A and C = 10 + x; NOT sufficient.

Combining (1) and (2), distance between cities A and B = 20 miles (look at the 1st figure); SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is C.

Do we know the direction of each cities wrt to each other?I think we need to know the direction of cities wrt eachother to solve.

Please let me know if my thought process is correct.

Yes, that's absolutely correct. This is why statement 1 alone is not sufficient, and the figures explains this.

The correct answer is C.
I think if we combine, we'd have distance between cities A and B = 40 miles, thus proving the first figure inapplicable.

Quick question. How do we know all the three cities are in a straight line?

Sanju09,
could you please confirm the OA?

I am still not able to get how can it be C....IMO we cant deduce if the cities are in straight line from A & B taken together....so should be E?

Please clarify. thanks.

IMO it should be E.
If we combine both statements, both must hold true for the final answer.
However, by combining, we find that A - B=40 & B -C=10 but it contradicts statement 1 which says B to C = 30. So my question is how can 2 statements contradict to give C as an answer.

I am still not convinced.

How far in miles is city A from city B?
I. City A is 50 miles away from city C, whereas city B is 30 miles away from city C.
II. City A is 10 more miles far from city C as it is from city B.

Statement 2 tells about how far City A is from C.Does that mean A, B and C are in same direction?
OA C
We are to answer distance AB. Statement I says that distance AC is 50, and statement II says that distance AB is 10 less than distance AC, or AB = 50 - 10 = 40.

Thanks sanju09...I guess now it did make some sense to me....and for option C to be correct it is not necessary that A, B and C are in a straight line...they could be in straight line or C could be somewhere between A and B....thanks for your explanation.....
