LSAT section 2 set 26

by gmatnmein2010 » Thu Feb 11, 2010 2:40 am
Veterinarian: A disease of purebred racehorses that is caused by a genetic defect prevents afflicted horses from racing and can cause paralysis and death. Some horse breeders conclude that because the disease can have such serious consequences, horses with the defect should not be bred. But they are wrong because, in most cases, the severity of the disease can be controlled by diet and medication and the defect also produces horses of extreme beauty that are in great demand in the horse show industry.
2.The point of the veterinarian's response to the horse breeders is most accurately expressed by which one of the following?
(A) Racehorses that have the genetic defect need not be prevented from racing.
(B) There should not be an absolute ban on breeding racehorses that have the genetic defect.
(C) Racehorses that are severely afflicted with the disease have not been provided with the proper diet.
(D) The best way to produce racehorses of extreme beauty is to breed horses that have the genetic defect.
(E) There should be no prohibition against breeding racehorses that have any disease that can be controlled by diet and exercise

if u are luking for >700 what should be the accuracy rate in LSAT CR

For me, B makes the most sense. The veterinarian says that this genetic defect can be controlled and that it produces horses of extreme beauty. Therefore, there is no need for an absolute ban on the breeding of horses with this defect.

A is not correct because it directly contradicts info in the passage: the afflicted horses CANNOT race.

C is not the main point of the explanation either, because the diet of the afflicted horses is not the main point, it's their breeding. What this option says might be true, but it does not cover the MAIN point of the text.

D - there is nothing in the text that suggests this. Indeed, horses bred from those with this defect do look good, but they're not necessarily the most beautiful.

E - close contender, but I still think that B makes more sense. This is slightly tangential to the point, because the veterinarian does not seem to make a general point (as indicated by the statement), but rather a more specific one relating to this disease in particular.

And to answer your question: CR was my biggest weakness before I used the CR Bible by PowerScore. A few days before my real test, I took GMATprep #2 and had ZERO mistakes in CR. My accuracy in OG questions had also improved! I am also confident I did not miss more than one CR in the real test (my verbal score was 47). However, I did comparatively worse in LSAT CR because it's much tougher. I looked over a set of 25 questions and got 5 of them wrong! Of course, this is my very own experience, it might be different for someone else.

One more for B....

When it come to LSAT CR, I love them the most. Long time Back Dana suggested me to practice LSAT CR and its doing wonders for me...

Coming to the Question, B & E are very close contenders.. Yeah in LSAT it has to be that close...

Let us have a keen look at the wordings(keywords ) used by the author.
.....Some horse breeders conclude that because the disease can have such serious consequences, horses with the defect should not be bred

Horse breeeders say horses with the defect should not be bred.....so the response of the veterian could be there should not be an absolute ban on breeding racehorses that have the genetic defect.

Here veterian can only "recommend" , where as in E, veterian gives an "final verdict" that is almost wrong...

Now I accept some good CR posts are coming on the forum after the streak of poor/low quality ones..

Coming to ur question to score morethan 700 whats the hit rate in LSAT??

Basically LSAT has so many type of CR that may "will" not appear in GMAT. But if u try those common/basic types like assumption, strengthen, weaken, conclusion, evaluate the arg, inference, excet questions...I feel 15/18 questions would be great.

In total there would 25/26 questions. SO exclusing 7-8 questions we have 18 questions. SO if we can hit 15 right ,its great & would certainly boost your confidence...

Same with LSAT RC!!

Hi,
I am just new to these kinda difficult qs but hope i am going the right way :)

Firstly this is a main point question wherein we do not suspect whats there in the stimulus.
The conclusion is the severity of the disease can be controlled by diet and medication and the defect also produces horses of extreme beauty that are in great demand in the horse show industry.

Now we need to figure out whats the author's main point based on this conclusion.

The only one that fits in is B . its phrasing the author's conclusion in the apt way .

Hence i'd go with B :)

Mind you the words in the passage used are should not be bred.

Incorrect : Vet's response is not this extreme. Eliminated.

(B) There should not be an absolute ban on breeding racehorses that have the genetic defect.
Correct : The vet says that in most (not all) cases the disease can be controlled by diet and medication. It implies that what he means is that racehorses with genetic defect should not be absolutely banned from breeding.

(C) Racehorses that are severely afflicted with the disease have not been provided with the proper diet.
Incorrect : Nothing in the argument above implies that the vet meant this. Eliminated.

(D) The best way to produce racehorses of extreme beauty is to breed horses that have the genetic defect.
Incorrect : 'The Best Way' ..... ughhh it is way toooooo extreme for my liking :( Eliminated.

(E) There should be no prohibition against breeding racehorses that have any disease that can be controlled by diet and exercise
Incorrect : This is a close contender but (B) wins for its clarity and brevity.

Hope this helps : )

Conclusion: The contention that horses with genetic defect should not be bred is wrong

A - Not the conclusion
B- My choice of answer
C- No way related to the theme of the passage
D - Not supported by the passage
E- The author protests against the ban on breeding racehorses with genetic defect, not all defects
