Distance traveled from X to Town Z = Speed*time
since, (speed = distance/time)

distance traveled = 50*60 miles/hour
the distance (d') between Z and Y is half the distance between X and Z
distance Z_Y = 150 miles

Time = distance/speed
time = 150/75
= 2 hours

Hi All,

We're told that Scott takes a trip and drives 6 hours from Town X to Town Z at a rate of 50 miles per hour. On his way back, Scott drives 75 miles per hour and stops in Town Y which is MIDWAY between Town X and Town Z. We're asked for the number of HOURS Scott takes to drive from Town Z to Town Y. This question is a multi-step 'rate' question; the individual steps aren't too difficult, so you just have to do the necessary work on your pad and keep track of your data.

To start, Scott drives 6 hours at 50 miles/hour... so he traveled (6)(50) = 300 miles
He then drives back at 75 miles/hour... so the trip back would take 300/75 = 4 hours
On the way back, he stops MIDWAY through, so he stops after 150 miles and 2 hours.
The rest of the trip will be the remaining 150 miles and 2 hours.

Final Answer: E

We see that the distance between Town X and Town Z is 6 x 50 = 300 miles, and since Town Y is halfway between Town X and Town Z, the distance between Town Z and Town Y is 150 miles. Since Scott is driving 75 mph from Town Z to Town Y, it takes him 150/75 = 2 hours to do so.
