680-680-680 - What am I to do?

by hatrick » Mon Sep 26, 2011 8:46 pm
Hi Everyone,

I just took the GMAT for the third time a couple days back, and the result has been exactly the same as the previous two attempts:

On all three occasions, I worked extremely hard especially for the third one, and by extremely hard I mean to the point where my job got a bit shaky cause I gave the GMAT more importance. My target was mid 700 when i took it the first time; was terribly disappointed. After reality struck, I lowered the target to 730; disappointment revisited in twice the intensity when I got a 680 again. Realizing that CR was kinda my weakness, I targeted this area and practiced a lot. And I told myself, this is gonna be the final time I'm meeting the monster.

Target was 730 (49/40). Unfortunately, this CR 'sub-monster' got me again, as I came across 8-9 CR questions that completely stumped me. I'm pretty sure I got most of them wrong, cause even the process of elimination didn't work. Heartbroken to see that 680 again, I was wondering how on earth did the CR get so damn tough - it was way tougher than the material I practiced on. And it was only CR that I found impossible to crack, not SC, not RC. Has CR or verbal in general become tougher over the past several months?

A study partner of mine scored a whopping 760 (49/44/4.0) shortly before I took it the second time, and he told me that CR was such a cakewalk for him. I just don't get it - we studied the same material from the same institute, nothing extra. In fact, I was the one helping him on verbal while he helped me on math. And I'm not someone who gets unduly nervous during the exam.

So I'm sitting here thinking what needs to be done as I left no stone unturned in the third attempt: should I do something different, re-strategize, and take it AGAIN? Or should I merely reconcile to the fact that 680 is just my score?...this however is a bitter pill to swallow.

Your thoughts are highly appreciated.

I guess I'll apply to universities with this score, and see where it takes me. If I don't get thru, I may really have to take the GMAT again!

You have not mentioned which books you have used for CR, what was your accuracy in CR on practise tests etc. A different approach would be to read non fiction for 3-4 months and then prepare and give GMAT. CR does require speed reading.

Hi hatrick,

Have you visited MBA.com, which provides 2 free official GMAT practice exams? These will give you a good idea on how well you will do on the actual exam. Depending on which business schools you are interested in, if you are scoring 40+ points higher on the practice tests, it may be worth taking the GMAT again. Your GMAT score is self-reported on your application, so admissions teams will be focused on your highest score.

Best,

Hi AbhiJ,

For CR, I studied the OG 12th edition, 700 to 800 club questions, the Manhattan CR GMAT strategy guide, and the compilation of verbal questions that my institute gave me. Generally the accuracy was 2-3 wrong in about 12 questions. I worked out around 12 questions everyday for several weeks, as well as 15/16 SC, and 14 RC in that proportion so as to match the GMAT style. Speed was not a problem for me - I could crack most of the CR questions in 2 mins.

Hi Stacy,

I tried both the GMAT prep tests twice each as part of my preparation for the first two attempts, and since the questions were exhausted by then, taking them further wasn't really gonna help me. I re-downloaded the prep tests before the third attempt; however, they were still the same - no updates. So based on the results of other prep tests, I decided to take it a third time. But boy, was I in for a rude shock!

hatrick:I totally understand your situation.
Here is my story:
GMAT1:660(AWA 6.0)
GMAT2:680(AWA 6.0)
And even i was expecting something around 750 the first time when I scored 660 and around 730 the next time when I scored 680.
I really dont understand how this works, but the score that you get it what that matters.
I also thought a lot about these things and I am still thinking.
What I am doing is that, I am applying to UNIV which have avg GMAT of 680 or lower and which are ranked in top 40 UNIV on usnews. Here is the link:
https://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandr ... a-rankings

If the above approach does not work out, I would retake GMAT next year around march/april.
This would give me a sufficient break and freshen me up.
I am telling you this just to give a perpective around things.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck![/url]

I haven't read Manhattan CR but have browsed through it. Powerscore CR is awesome.
The main problem with Manhattan Guides is that they use the same guide in classroom so they are not that self-explanatory. Powerscore uses different guides for classroom(much condensed).

Hey Dhonu,

Couldn't help but notice ur awesome AWA scores! Anyway, im pretty much following ur plans here, that is apply to some schools in the top 50 in the US that's within my reach, and see how far I can go with that. If nothing works, its GMAT yet again. As for u, at least there was an encouraging 30 point improvement. Well, good luck to u 2!
