C is the correct answer. The scientists should have identified not only the asteroid itself but also the possible effects of its strike on Earth. So there should be a 'that' before the second part of the sentence.

We can eliminate A and B.

D is passive voice which is not preferable to active, and also Earth seems as if itself 'can do part of the planet tremendous damage'

E has conditional error. 'If it strikes' is not parallel to 'it could'
