Mixture Problems

Products A and B are worth $1.20 and $1.60 per pound, respectively, How much of each product must be combined to make a new product of 50 pounds which is worth $1.5 per pound?

My solution: 1.2(50-x) + 1.6(x) = 1.5(500)
I got the correct answer, 37.5. My question is how do you know what part of the equation is assigned (50-x)? Is it always the lesser value or does it depend?.

from your question.. aren't you suppose to get two values, the amounts of X and Y respectively?

What does 37.5 mean? 37.5 pounds of X or Y?
