In a certain shipment, x out of every y items were found to be defective. If 10 defective items were found in the shipment, what was the total number of items in the shipment?

(A) (10y) / x
(B) (10x) / y
(C) 10y
(D) (10y) / (y-x)
(E) (10y) / (x-y)
The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.

just use the strategy of picking numbers say the total number of items is 40 so 10 out of 40 items are defective. If you plug those numbers in you will find that A is the only one that gives you the correct answer.

10(40)/10=40

This could be solved by establishing ratios.
x:y = 10:T OR x/y = 10/T
Solving for T, we get T= 10y/x

ie A
