confusing exponents

by Fractal » Thu Sep 30, 2010 7:07 am
i am just confused:

2^(-2)^2 = 2^4 --> not 2^(-4)

but:

4^(x-1)^2 = 4^(2x-2)

so in the first expression, we square the exponent, but in the
second expression, we just multiply the exponents.

when multiplying and when take the square??

who can explain me this? thx :-)

The action depends on where the parentheses are. If you had [2^(-2)]^2 you would multiply the exponents and get 2^(-4). Without the brackets, you deal with the exponent first, squaring it before you apply it to the base. It is much easier to see when you can write it out rather than trying to type it.
