Mind boggling!

I found this question really hard and despite seeing the solution, I still don't get it.

@ and ^ represents single digits in the correctly worked computation above, what is the value of @ times ^?

We have:

2A7 x B14 = 80,698

2A7 * (B* 100 + 14)
2A7 * B * 100 + 2A7 * 14 = 80,698
2A7 * B * 100 + (2 * 100 + A7) * 14 = 80,698
2A7 * B * 100 + 2 * 100 * 14 + A7 * 14 = 80,698

A7 * 14 = ...98
(A * 10 + 7 ) * 14 = ...98
A * 10 * 14 + 98 = ...98
A * 10 * 14 = ...00, hence A * 14 has to end with zero, A = 5

Now divide 80,698 by 257. You can see that B = 3

A * B = 15
