IMO its A.

When i saw a different answer here, i checked some other forums. Check this out

Seems like Kaplan 800 says A is correct.

ya i am sure about OA,
See B,c andE can be rules out easily. The doubt is with A and E, what i feel the use of 'mark 'and 'marking' make all the difference. i think 'marking' correctly describes the ability of those colored sediments to display the passage of time. use of mark indicates that these colored sediments generally indicates the passage of time.

The OA is A from Kaplan 800

D is too wordy
The difference between mark and marking here is not important because it is gram. correct and doesn't change the meaning
