By using the comma, 'ultrathin' becomes a qualifier for the 'layered construction'
By using 'and', 'ultrathin' qualifies the wings rather than the 'construction'
So, depending on what you want to talk about, you can use either of the two forms of construction.

I think even in above case 'ultrathin' and 'layered' modifies 'construction' because 'ultrathin' is an ADJECTIVE so 'ultrathin of a butterfly's wings' as suggested above would be incorrecttheperegrine wrote: By using 'and', 'ultrathin' qualifies the wings rather than the 'construction'
