"All Groups and Organizations should function as teams in which everyone makes decision and shares responsibilities and duties. Giving one person central authority and responsibility for a project or task is not an effective way to get work done"

All groups or organizations have a different way of organizing their work. Some might enhance teamworks to share responsabilities, whereas others may prefer having only one person responsible for the whole project or task. Althgough a case could be made for choosing to have a central authority, I firmly believe that teamwork is the most effective way to get work done. Indeed, working in teams allows not only to combine several ideas, but also to get employees more involved in the decision making process and to spread the risk.

My chief reason that leads me to agree with the statement above is that teams are composed of several members, each of them having different skills. Combining these skills is more effective in executing the task. Indeed, One person may contribute to a certain aspect that another one would not be able to handle. Furthermore, team members might bring up interesting ideas to build up the project and make it more compelling. Being alone, one cannot think about all the different aspects to take into account. Sharing points of view by working in teams makes it possible. Thus, one can learn from eachother, which is very rewarding not only on the professional plan, but also on the personal plan. In most of the companies, an annual report is organized to present the results of the year, and also to suggest improvements. All the employees are invited to participate. This case illustrates the importance of learning from eachothers since an employee might have a different look at a situation than someone else.

Secondly, working in teams means also more people taking an active part in the process. Involving employees in the decision making process enhances motivation. As a matter of fact, employees feel that their contribution is important and that the company includes them in the decisions. Consequently, it increases their motivation, feeling that they are part of the company. This motivation increases their participation among the teamwork, and they are more willing to bring up new ideas and be implicated. In addition, more people means finishing the work faster. Since everybody shares duties, there is less pressure on each member and more efficient. In assembly-line-work companies, for instance car industry, managers have quickly understood the time saved in spreading the duties.

Another major point needs to be highlighted: a central authority can be harmfull for the sake of the company. For instance, if at some point of the project the manager gets sick or decides to quit, the process has to be started over from the beginning, without any clues of which decisions or processes have been adopted since this stage, due to a lack of communication with other parts and the retention of the necessary information by only one person. This situation implies not only a waste of time, but also a loose of money invested since the starting point. Working with teams avoids this inconvenience by spreading the risk among the participants. Thus, if someone cannot be part of the group anymore for any reason, it does not affect the group on the same level since the other team members are still here to pursue the duties and the certain amount of communication established in the group allows the other team members to take over the tasks of the missing employee.

Last but not least, I conceive that some might agree that having only one person responsible for a whole project makes the decisions easier. However, a company needs to take decisions in agreement with its employees. If the latters do not believe in the company’s decisions taken by only one person, they will not apply them, or inefficiently and this situation will lead to the destruction of the brand image. In consequence, team members who have an equal power allow them to agree all together on important points, so that they believe in it and are able to convey the message efficiently.

To conclude, many companies should consider the pros and cons of giving the power to a unique person. Organizing team work can pushes employees to give the best of themsevles by being implicated in the company’s process whereas letting one person deciding for everybody refers to a dictatural process, which we all know is inefficient for the company’s sake.
