How's it going guys? I'm a semester away from graduating with a Bachelors of Business Management from a mid level university with a 3.7 GPA. I'm in a unique situation, in which I have a profitable family business waiting for me to take over. One side of the coin is that, great, I have something lined up. The other side of the coin is that there's a lot of pressure on me to succeed as the manager of an already well established business. Bottom line is I don't want to go into it and be looked at as "The boss' son." I want to provide genuine value and expand the business. My question is, should I get my MBA, or would learning real time with my father be a better use of the next few years? The business is a private medical practice, so it is specific and has it's nuances related to the medical field. But I can honestly say that after taking all these classes in Accounting, Finance, and Management, I still have no clue how to truly run a business. Undergrad fails at putting the pieces together. Anyway, all advice is greatly appreciated!
Well, I think the problem is solved since for the most part an MBA will want you to have at least 2-3 years experience. My advice to you: Go with your dad, learn the ropes, get some leadership experience, and some pet projects so that you can show great achievements (don't forget some community service) and apply in 3 years so that you can learn how to propel your family business into the next level.
Best,
