Calorie restriction, a diet high in nutrients but low in calories, is known to prolong the life of rats and mice by preventing heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. A six-month study of 48 moderately overweight people, who each reduced their calorie intake by at least 25 percent, demonstrated decreases in insulin levels and body temperature, with the greatest decrease observed in individuals with the greatest percentage change in their calorie intake. Low insulin level and body temperature are both considered signs of longevity, partly because an earlier study by other researchers found both traits in long - lived people.

If the above statements are true, they support which of the following conclusions or inferences?

A] Calorie restriction produces similar results in humans as it does in rats and mice.

B] Humans who reduce their calorie intake by at least 25 percent on a long-term basis will live longer than they would have had they not done so.

C] Calorie intake is directly correlated to insulin level in the moderately overweight individuals.

D] Individuals with low insulin levels are healthier than individuals with high insulin levels.

E] Some individuals in the study reduced their calorie intake by more than 25 percent.

OA is E.

This is a good question, try it and see if you could solve it in 1 min...

Good one.

A] Calorie restriction produces similar results in humans as it does in rats and mice.
>> Study is related to moderately overweight individuals and not to all Humans.

B] Humans who reduce their calorie intake by at least 25 percent on a long-term basis will live longer than they would have had they not done so.
>>Study is related to moderately overweight individuals and not to all Humans.

C] Calorie intake is directly correlated to insulin level in the moderately overweight individuals.
>> Not sure whether Calorie intake is directly correlated to insulin level? Not sure what happens, if Calorie intake is decreased to very low, will insulin level also become very low or just low.

D] Individuals with low insulin levels are healthier than individuals with high insulin levels.
>>Not sure whether low insulin levels and HIGH body temperature is good, so ding.

E] Some individuals in the study reduced their calorie intake by more than 25 percent.
>> Answer.

One important thing which I would love to share with all the Gmat aspirants is that I think I had read it somewhere that is maybe online or in Kaplan 800 book.

The Cr's that have surveys or studies have always given me a hard time and so I finally took a challenge to those and I gave a look at them.

Remember one thing whenever there is survey undertaken lets say of 25 people or 50 people or even 1000 people, you cannot generalize the conclusion of that survey for the universe. Even if you generalize for the universe, remember you have to or you will find words like mostly, more commonly, more often, more chances i.e words expressing probability.

If you do not use such words then it is considered an extreme case or an extreme statement or an extreme conclusion.

So in short you can easily prove something or conclude anything from the universe to the sample but you cannot express or conclude anything specific from the sample to the universe ; if you want to generalize from sample to the universe , then words probabilistic words are extremely important.

Remember this in every sample or survey critical reasoning question. Just like Causal Reasoning and Numbers and Percentages in the CR, Sample or Survey questions is also a completely different type.

Apply it in as many questions as possible and you will find that it is easier to get the OA right without much disturbance to your brain and these CR' would become easier to solve.

Took a lot of time to analyze though, Hope this explanation really helps all the guyzzzz who find CR's a bit difficult or have CR's as their weakness in the overall GMAT preparation...

Hope this genuinely helped!!!!!!
