If the letters of the word CHASM are rearranged to form 5 letter words such that none of the word repeat and the results arranged in ascending order as in a dictionary what is the rank of the word CHASM?


(A) 24
(B) 30
(C) 31
(D) 32
(E) 33

words starting with A = 4x3x2x1 = 24
words starting with ca = 3x2x1 =6
words starting with cham=1
next one is CHASM

The OA is D.
The first letter in alphabetical order is A. A-CHSM, then you have 4! ways to permute the remaining letter: 4*3*2*1=24.
The 2nd letter in alphabetical order is C => CH-ASM, then you have 3! ways to permute the 3 remaining letters: 3*2*1=6.
The 3rd letter in alphabetical order is H => CHA-MS and CHA-SM => 24+6+2=32.
I'd say D.
