had occupied and fortified seems correct as this happened before the 893 episode...as both events are in past....the earlier one should have a had..

Whats OA ?

IMO B

A has an awkward construction, IN C,D and E, pronoun 'it' referring to clause, is incorrect

Guys chill out :)
OA is B ,as everyone expected .

This is a 1000 SC document question.

I agree to the explanartion, two time period are given - so we need past perfect in the first part of sentence. - king alfred had alread conquered London and this fast was later realised by Danes.

Hence only B is correct.
A - wrong tense.

Rest all B , C, and E do not come close even, ambiguous pronoun - "it".
