Growing out of a need for affordable housing during the Great Depression, the first student housing cooperatives were structured as not-for-profit organizations, whose members made small payments toward their room and board, then taking turns performing household duties, such as meal preparation and property maintenance.

whose members made and then took turns

A)board, then taking turns performing
verb is missing after comma

B) board, and then taking turns performing

C)board and then took turns performing
performing is correctly describing turns

D)board and then took turns, they performed
we need ";" or "and" to connect two clauses
they is not having clear referent

E)board and then took turns and performed
took turns and performed are not two different tasks
performing is actually describing turns

In C isn't it necessary to use a COMMA after terns...?

When you use a COMMA -ING modifier after a clause**, you should actually satisfy TWO requirements:

1. the modifier should modify the action of the preceding clause;
2. The subject of the preceding clause should also make sense as the agent of the -ING action.

This sort of modifier should additionally satisfy TWO requirements:

1) It should apply most nearly to the subject of the preceding clause (as you've said); and, even more importantly,
2) It should have one of the following RELATIONSHIPS to that clause:
* Immediate consequence
* Simultaneous, but lower-priority, action
Modifiers also take the tense of the Preceding clause.

Noun +Ing + without comma : ING will be modifying proceeding noun

in given question
"board and then took turns performing household duties, such as meal preparation and property maintenance. "
turns performing : here performing is modifying turns, explaining/giving more info about it,turns of what
so comma will not come

Yes I am confused. Because, I don't understand how do "turns" perform household duties?
