courier charges

by kanha81 » Mon Jun 08, 2009 5:58 am
Courier charges for packages to a certain destination are 65 cents for the first 250 grams and 10 cents for each additional 100 grams or part thereof. What could be the weight in grams of a package for which the charge is $1.55 ?

A. 1155
B. 1145
C. 1040
D. 950
E. 259

I strongly dislike such problems as I am clueless  where to even begin?????

This is how I started-
250 * 0.65 + 100 * 0.10 + n * .10 * 100 = x*1.15

Then I went downhill and randomly picked an answer. I ended up wasting so much time on this problem. Please help me understand this one.

Bunch of thanks.

IMO B-1145

first 250 grams-65 cents,
remaining 90 cents
80 cents for 800 grams- total is 145 cents now.
10 cents for another 95 grams- it says "or part thereof"
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!

tohellandback,
Silly as it may seem, could you please explain how you equated the last 10 cents to another 95 grams?

Would you not take for additional 10 cents 100 gms?

Kanha,
don't worry..it's never silly..you have no idea how silly I get sometimes..
okay for 100 grams or less we need to count 10 cents. thats why I took 10 cents for 95 grams.
for ex: If you take the first option, It will be 105 grams remaining..10 cents for the 100 grams and 10 cents for other 5 grams. total will be 165 cents
The question says 10 cents for each additional 100 grams or part thereof.
so any extra weight (1-100 grams) will add 10 cents to the total charge.

Hope I am clear.
Thanks
