I need some clarification of the 2 problems please. If you can explain step-by-step instruction I would appreciate it. be simple...


1- At the garage sale, all of the prices of the items sold were different. If the price of a radio sold at the garage sale was both the 15th highest price and the 20th lowest price among the price of the items sold, how many items were sold at the garage sale?

Answer: I know that the solution is 34 (14+19+1=34). Can someone explain where did the 1 come from??? and Is there any different way of solving it.??




2- If Mel saved more than $10 by purchasing a sweater at 15 percent discount, what is the smallest amount the original price if the sweater could be, to the nearest dollar?

Problem1:

Let the prices in ascending order be pa1,pa2pa3......
now we know that the pa15 is radio.
Which means that there are 14 items before radio.

Let the prices in descending order be pd1,pd2pd3......
now we know that the pd20 is radio.
Which means that there are 19 items before radio.

so in total there should be 14(By asccending) + 19(By Descending) +1(radio itself)

so total there are 34 items

Problem2:

let p be the price of the sweater. So 15percent of p is the discount.

which means 0.15p is the discount.
its givent hat 0.15p>10 by solving this we get p>6.66
therefore nearest dollar is 7

Is this right? or am I missing something?

I believe the answer should be 67 not 7. If we solve 0.15p>10, we should get p>66.66, not p>6.66.

I believe the answer should be 67 not 7. If we solve 0.15p>10, we should get p>66.66, not p>6.66.

for the first problem my way will be like below.

If you think the items are arranged in ascending order.

From the left we have 15 items and from the right we have 20 items (with respective to the item 'x').

And this item 'x' is counted twice from left and right( so we deduct once), so 15+20-1=34.
