When 'A' competes the race, 'B' is 12m behind and 'C' is 18m behind.

Also, given when 'B' completes the race 'C' is 8m behind.

That is when 'B' runs 12m, 'C' runs 10m.

(or) 'B' gains 2m for every 12m. Given 'B' beats 'C' by 8m.

So the track should be 12*4 = 48m

Why is 'D' mentioned?
