film guy profile evaluation

by bsbonus » Wed Dec 07, 2011 7:09 pm
Hey just hoping I could get some thoughts on my general profile:

Relevant info:

Gmat: 740 (49Q, 42V)
GPA: 3.5 overall, 3.8 major
College: B.A. Film, Television, Digital Media at UCLA

College Things:
-Working around 20hrs/week during all of college (SAT instructor then private tutor)
-Last 2 years held 4 unpaid internships at various film companies

Work Exp;
-1.5 years producer/director/editor for new media site. I was responsible for creating short-form documentary work on upcoming bands, artists, and interesting happenings. Some clients included Universal Music Group, the Sunset Strip Music Festival and Puma.
-2.5 years assistant editor for a post-production house. I've worked on national commercial broadcast campaigns for brands including Hyundai, LG, AT&T, Lexus and Skyy Vodka. I'm currently acting as lead assistant editor on a low-budget feature film.

Extracurriculars
-Served as social media and events committee for UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television's Young Alumni Network, which is in it's inaugural year. We've done some mixer events and are in the process of planning a festival of new works and a speaker series for current students

Short Term: Digital media strategist for reputable ad agency like Wieden + Kennedy
Long Term: Little bit more vague, I'm really interested in the intersect of interactive content, storytelling and advertising, so potentially staying on the ad agency side of things or moving to a tech company like Microsoft. I could easily see myself

Target schools:
Stanford, HBS, Wharton, UCLA, USC, NYU

Should I even bother with S/H/W? Are there any other schools I should consider throwing in the mix? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, look forward to hearing from you.

Hey there film dude!
Your profile is looking mighty good. You have a sweet GMAT, very good grades, and most importantly come from an interesting and great industry that oddly enough is seen far and few between in MBA programs. So you got a big uniqueness factor going for you there. I think you can reasonably try for H/S/W (Stanford LOVES humanities/arts people). You cam up with a very well informed list given your media background and goals. Columbia should be there too, they have a nice film program, journalism school, in NYC etc. Austin could be a great one for you too.

Hi Jon

Thanks very much for the feedback, I appreciate it! Didn't want to really waste the effort on H/S/W unless I had at least a modest chance. Thanks for clarifying!

Yeah, go for it. You can add a few more programs that fit and that you would additionally like to go to. I don't know if you want to return to your alma mater, but that could be an option, as could NYU and Columbia which besides being in NY, are pretty hooked up.
