Whether or not all employees at the highest level of management, require supervision is of contention, however I agree that no employees should have complete autonomy over making decisions regarding their work. There are several reasons why I feel that autonomy is a recipe for chaos.
First, the aim of an organization is to run the business profitability, ensuring employee satisfaction and end user customer satisfaction. This is applicable whether it is a private or public business, product development in industry or services provided. Companies, SMBs, large corporations, mid-size industries all have some hierarchy to ensure accountability. Without accountability, there is risk to business operations and profitability.
Second, another reason why complete autonomy would not work is that individuals perform at different levels and need to be rewarded on the basis of their contributions. It is not possible to effectively monitor the performance of a bunch of individuals who work autonomously and provide the required output.
Even with supervision it is possible for individuals to work in a manner that is not in the best interest of the organization. Therefore, Human Capital management is critical to business operations, employee satisfaction and profitability. People management and status reporting is a key component of organizational behavior just as corporate communications, financial accounting, quality.
