US Army SC

by manihar.sidharth » Wed Jan 15, 2014 8:47 am
In the U.S. Army, individual squads are combined to form platoons of 16 to 44 soldiers, each of which consists of a lieutenant and an NCO (non-commissioned officer), who are first and second in command, respectively.

A each of which consists of a lieutenant and an NCO (non-commissioned officer)
B each platoon consisting of a lieutenant and an NCO (non-commissioned officer)
C with each of them consisting of a lieutenant and an NCO (non-commissioned officer)
D and each platoon consisting of a lieutenant and an NCO (non-commissioned officer)
E each consists of a lieutenant and an NCO (non-commissioned officer)

OA B My question : Isn't the clause "each platoon consisting of a lieutenant and an NCO (non-commissioned officer)" missing a verb.

Please help!!

Hi,

I think I can explain.
A. - incorrect, each of which is modifying 'soldiers'.. so not making any sense.
B. - No error (platoon consisting of.. is used as clause(as adjective) here. inclusion of verb will make it different standalone statement and then we need conjunction (semicolon) for joining 2 separate statements.
C. - incorrect- 'them' referring to?
D. - incorrect- and after comma
E. - incorrect - 'each' modifying soldiers.

I hope you understand what I am trying to say.

Hi Siddhu
If "platoon consisting of..." is a clause then it should have a verb ..Don't you agree?

Hi,

As I explained, in case of verb it will become independent sentence and cannot be used with comma as conjunction.
Remember, GMAT looks for best option and it may not be completely correct one. I can understand that this looks like bit awkward when you try to speak, but it's the best among all options.
