Experts estimate that ten times as much petroleum exists in sources like tar sands, heavy oil, and perhaps even in shale than in conventional reservoirs.
A. sources like tar sands, heavy oil, and perhaps even in shale than
B. sources like tar sands, heavy oil, and perhaps even in shale than are
C. such sources as tar sands, heavy oil, and perhaps even in shale as are
D. such sources as tar sands, heavy oil, and perhaps even shale as
E. such sources as tar sands, heavy oil, and perhaps even shale than

OA is D .

Question, the usage of in in answer Choices A and C is incorrect ?

or If I rewrite D as , it is correct?

Experts estimate that ten times as much petroleum exists in such sources as tar sands, heavy oil, and perhaps even in shale as in conventional reservoirs.

A and B are incorrect because "like" is used there.

I think rewriting D as you've suggested will not be correct as "in" is not used in the second item in the list,i.e., "heavy oil".

Hi,
'like' means 'similar to' and 'such as' means 'for example
A is incorrect because of usage of'like' instead of 'such as'.

If we rewrite C:
Experts estimate that ten times as much petroleum exists in sources such as tar sands, heavy oil, and perhaps even in shale as are conventional reservoirs.

The list following 'Such as' should be a list in which all items are parallel. tar sands,heavy oil,shale(in C, this is replaced by 'in sand')

Hence, answer D

we require such to give examples therefore, left with options C, D and E but in C usage of "are" is incorrect as the subject "petroleum" is singular, E is wrong because of "than" as the correct idiom is "as X as Y"

It's less parallel but more emphatic to repeat the extra "in". Normally I would expect the "in" repeated for all or just used once.
