Trying to make up for wasted time

by XeroZeus » Tue May 14, 2013 10:15 am
Hello BTG,

As someone who has just recently started perusing these forums, I am excited by the wealth of information accessible with regards to the MBA application and acceptance process.

Has anyone ever heard of an applicant being dismissed from a university and later being accepted to a top tier B-school? To explain, my GPA fell below 2.0 in the beginning of my academic career, to the point where I was dismissed from the school. Later on, I made school a priority and I attended community college. Eventually I gained acceptance into a private school in FL (Rollins College). At the time of application to B-school, I will have a 3.7 - 4.0 GPA at Rollins for just over 2 years and my overall GPA should reside at somewhere around 3.4. I am majoring in Economics with a minor in Business. My aspiration is to earn an MBA in Business Management.

I have just under a year left at Rollins and plan to start studying for the GMAT soon. I understand that I will need a 700+ on the GMAT to even gain consideration to the schools that I want to attend.

I have worked a job since I was 15 years old (I am currently 24. I will be 25 at time of application). I will have worked a full-time corporate job for 4.5 years at a company in the medical field at the time of application. The company is family-run and I have been elected for succession, which means that it is a necessity that I gain proper management knowledge and grooming. While I do not know that it is pertinent, the company is a small business in the medical billing field and bills over a quarter of a billion dollars annually.

I believe in being blunt and direct as oppose to soft coating things. What should I be focusing on at this point, other than straight A's to close out my undergraduate and studying for the GMAT. I appreciate any and all responses.

Well, I think that your attitude of being straight-up with your errors of youth is a good one. The best thing about your story is that you have already made good upon it by finishing up with a good GPA. I would say you should address this story in your optional essay, explaining the circumstances that led tot his happened, and showing how you made good upon it later in life. and ultimately, I think that AdComs do like to see stories of real struggle and the fact that you are forthcoming will also be appreciated.
