Hi All,

Don't we have to talk about our long term goal and short term goal OR address why I want an MBA in the Sloan cover letter? How do I then talk about the specific courses I am interested in or the Entrepreneurship and Innovation track they have?

I have copied the below text from the Sloan's website (FAQ section):

Should I focus on past achievements or future goals in my essays?
Concentrate on your past achievements. Help us better understand you and what you have already accomplished: past performance is the best predictor if future performance. Your essays and cover letter should focus on what you have already done, your past performance, rather than what you want to do. We do not evaluate you on why you want an MBA or what you intend to do with it afterwards, but do want to get to know you and your interests better.

This is what I have copied from Clearadmit's suggestion for this cover letter. I find the below suggestion (bolded and underlined) contradictory to what Sloan's FAQ section says. Can please someone explain or has a template of what needs to go in this cover letter.

A potential outline for this essay might open with a 'greeting' to the committee followed by a statement of your interest in MIT and what you would bring to the school, then a short statement of your career goals with a summary of the ways in which your experience to date has prepared you, then a "why MIT" section explaining why it is the best place for you in terms of what you need from an MBA and your fit with the school, concluding with a thank you.

Yes. You can talk about your goals.. Because they ARE an important part of why you are doing the program in the first place! But you don't necessarily have to write "My short term goals are: x My long term goals are x". Once you get your goals out, you can make it clear what you NEED from the MBA program to reach your goals, and of course, the final stage would be addressing what Sloan has that will fulfill those needs. You need to be a bit more holistic here, and like Sloan write put the focus rather on what you have ALREADY accomplished. (which, needless to say, should somehow be related to your goals). The important thing is to deliver a solid narrative that holds together about your motivations, your past, your reasons for doing an MBA at Sloan.

Hi gmataspirant123,

Mentioning goals should be fine. Tell them how your goals will be realized once you get into Sloan. You however do not need to categorize your goals in long term and short general overview should be fine. You could bring your courses bit as well saying how these courses you feel will lead you towards fulfilling your goals.
