644. Since 1975 the number of women in upper-level management in American corporations have increased by 25 percent; female executives' salaries, however, still lag behind those of their male counterparts.
(A) have increased by 25 percent; female executives' salaries, however, still lag
(B) has increased by 25 percent, however much their salaries lag
(C) have increased 25 percent; female executives' salaries, however, still have lagged
(D) has increased by 25 percent; female executives' salaries, however, still lag
(E) have increased 25 percent; their salaries, however, still lag

IMO D coz "the number" needs a singular verb..and however can not be used as a conjunction as used in B.. semicolon is requeired here.. D is best..

B IMO.
I think that semicolon is not required because we are bringing "however" to show a contrast to the situation. If we need to show the contrast, we should use a comma.
Please post the OA.

In B, however can't be used to join clauses; should use "but" instead. and I think B is also missing much "of" their salaries...?

Between B and D, although B resolves S-V, use of "their" is incorrect in the sentence.

the answer should be D.

IMO D -

'the number......has' is the correct usage

A,C and E are out.

between B and D -

B has awkward construction - '.....however much their salaries lag' - Hence incorrect

D - correctly uses two clauses seperated by a semicolon.
