Dear Sir,

I am currently a chief officer(head of department and part of senior management on ship), on the track of becoming a captain. I intend to apply for the fall 2014 intake. My profile is as follows:

Bachelors in Nautical Sciences

Work Ex- 12 years in merchant navy

Hold 7 certifications.

Awarded trainee with best attitude.

Long term Service award.

Worked with atleast 10 different nationalities of people.

I would like to know the strength of my profile, and what should be my probable score to get into the top 10 B-Schools. Also, I am yet to take the GMAT. Could you pls give me an estimate of the minimum score I must achieve?

Differentiating Factors

Strength of your profile can be very well measured when we compare you to your applicant pool. For example if I compare you with another merchant navy officer who has a 10-12 years experience, what do you think are the 3 differentiating factors?

Goal Clarity
In a world where 1000s of applicants are applying to B-schools every year, an applicant's goal clarity is of paramount importance. What are your long term goals and in line with these what are your post-MBA short term goals?

Have you given a sincere thought to these questions? If not you should because they would be a part of your MBA essays/interviews for sure.

GMAT
There is no GMAT cut-off as such put by B-schools. Higher the better is the general thumb rule. Asian applicants esp Indians tend to have high GMAT scores. You can get an idea about B-school's GMAT expectations by looking at class profile of last year's admits, where in they give Average GMAT score for last year's intakes.

The strong areas in your profile are good academic background and diverse work experience; try to make it stronger by adding 700+ GMAT score.

I would also suggest you to prepare for GMAT parallel with your applications, as you still have fair chances in applying for top b-schools.Visit https://www.general-ed.com/chances-of-bschool to gauge your chances.

Hence it would be highly advisable to seek assistance from professional consultants for guidance on preparing for GMAT preparation & stellar application, get your essays/scholarship essays evaluated before sending it out along with your application.
