a and b are integers such that a/b = 3.45. If R is the remainder of a/b, which of the following could not be equal to R?

A) 3
B) 9
C) 36
D) 81
E) 144

a = 3.45b

Remainder equation can be written as follow:

A = 3B + 0.45B (Y= AX + Remainder ; 7 =2x3 +1 )

since your remainder is 0.45b , and b is an integer

You have to check whether 0.45B=Integer and make sure that B is an integer

B = Integer / 0.45 = 100 Integer / 45 = 20 Integer / 9

So any answer choice that is not divisible with 9 is the correct answer

Hence, A

Thank bro, I knew its an easy question but I'm always struggling with these kids of questions..

I got your point, but I have question .. can we use this approach always with the remainder problems.. i mean by this approach ( dividing B as an integer over the fraction) ?

I would not call this an easy question. The take aways are more important than any questions we solve. We will not see ANY of these questions in the test but we will be asked the same RULES so yes please use the approach for the next question on your way AS LONG AS you know what you are doing. Let me know if you have any other questions so we can work on it together.
