Sentences with commas

by shahmau » Sun Dec 17, 2006 12:57 pm
India, like Italy and China, has no single dominant cuisine: Indian food comprises many different styles of cooking, with each a product of their regional influences, from the fiery vegetarian dishes of the south to the Portuguese-influenced Goan cooking of the West, to the more familiar Mogul food of the North

1. with each a product of their
2. with each as a product of its
3. each products of their
4. each a product of
5. each products of

Question I have is ....when you see a comma in a sentence .... I'm failing to understand what does it modify?

their in (a) refers to ???

I get confused whenever I see comma
1. If which is followed, I know it should refer to the word immediately before the comma ..
is there anything else?

In option 1 ---> their refers to?

Answer is D (4)[/u]

answer is definitely d.

you're totally right about the commas. the word following the comma usually refers to the word right before it:

cooking, each

with this example, cooking is a noun; with a comma, it's a appropriate to follow with a conjunction (which), another noun, or a pronoun.

'their' is vague and thus makes choice A wrong

How about this one?

....... Andy and Matt, who won the gold medal.

who should refer to the person just before the comma ..... but is this true even in the question mentioned above .. I mean isn't it confusing whether who refers to Matt? Andy or both???

Please explain, this thing is killing me !!

Thanks aim-wsc ... but I'm still not very clear...I'm revising the sentence

research was done by Andy and Matt, who received the gold medal.

OR

Matt, who received the gold medal, along with Andy did the research ----This is very clear ...and this was one of the option, but had some other errors .... But to me ... the earlier structure is also erroneous, but it was the right answer

I know who can refer to a person or a group of person .....but in this case ...it may seem that it is referring to Andy and Matt both ...but by looking at other choices ..it was clear that Matt received the gold medal

Please clarify.

Thanks
Maulik
