Just as a writer trying to understand shtetl life might read shalom Aleichem or Bashevis Singer,in the same way writers trying to understand Black life in the American South might well listen to records by the missisipi delta blues man Charlie Patton.

(A) in the same way writers trying to understand Black life in the American South might well listen to records

(B) in the same way writers who try and understand Black life in the American South might well listen to records

(C) So a Writer trying to understand Black life in the American South might well listen to records

(D)So do writers try and understand Black life in the American South might well listen to records

(E) then writers trying to understand Black life in the American South might well listen to records

G.shankaran correctly pointed out the correct idiom that would help you narrow down to the answer, but ,for this question, you don't even need to remember it to zero in on the correct answer; this was my approach (experts, please correct me if I am wrong)

Aside from C, all other answer choices contain incorrect comparisons - the sentence starts of by speaking about 'A writer', a singular subject but, choices A, B , D and E, all start of by speaking of writerS , a plural subject; hence A, B, D and E are eliminated.

Correct answer is C!!

Other errors in answer choices:

B and D are not parallell - The sentence prior to the underlined portion speaks about a writer trying TO understand whereas B and D state that the writers try AND understand

E - probably the easiest to eliminate: 'then writers trying to understand' doesn't make any sense when integrated with beginning
