Having logged thousands of hours

by sameerballani » Sat Jun 04, 2011 10:01 pm
Having logged thousands of hours watching primates from chimpanzees to macaques, chimps and other primates are no longer thought to be natural-born killers by Dr. Swenson, they are attuned to peacemaking.

A. chimps and other primates are no longer thought to be natural-born killers by Dr. Swenson, they
B. Dr. Swenson has come to believe that far from being natural-born killers, chimps and other primates
C. Dr. Swenson has now the belief that far from being natural-born killers, chimps and other primates
D. chimps and other primates are not longer thought to be natural-born killers by Dr. Swenson, they
E. chimps and other primates are no more thought to be natural-born killers by Dr. Swenson, they

Also comment on the following additional option

F. Dr. Swenson [now] believes that far from being natural-born killers, chimps and other primates

Hi,
IMO B
Logically, what follows the comma should be the person(Dr.Swenson) who has logged. So, A,D,E are out
B conveys the message correctly by showing cause-effect relation. Having...Dr. has come to believe...
Cheers!

This question is a time saver, I think the modifier thing is easy to spot.

only B and C come into picture.
C is wrong because of the passive structure. "has now the belief that"

Take away from this sentence :
Notice that the use of having is well depicted in the sentence. Having states that an event happened before another event and led to the second event.

However :
Having set, the sun rose again.- is wrong, as the first event is not leading to the other.
While :
Having being shown into the office, I waited for the dentist to arrive. - Is right.
Cheers !!

A,D & E are directly eliminated as discussed above.
& B is preferable over others(even F), as we have an uncertainty/Subjunctive mood - Dr has come to believe, hence the use of Infinitive - to Believe.
