EXPLANATION PLEASE

Overlooking a quaint eastern German village, an entrepreneur recently purchased the Schloss Hoheneck prison who plans to convert it into a hotel where customers will pay over US$100 per night to sleep on a hard bed, eat poor-quality food, and experience what he calls that "irresistible jail-house feeling".

Hey imskpwr,

Overlooking a quaint eastern German village, an entrepreneur recently purchased the Schloss Hoheneck prison who plans to convert it into a hotel where customers will pay over US$100 per night to sleep on a hard bed, eat poor-quality food, and experience what he calls that "irresistible jail-house feeling" The modifier 'Overlooking a quaint eastern German village' is modifying 'an entrepreneur' instead of the prison. Hence eliminate

Overlooking a quaint eastern German village, an entrepreneur who recently purchased the Schloss Hoheneck prison plans to convert it into a hotel where customers will pay over US$100 per night to sleep on a hard bed, eat poor-quality food, and experience what he calls that "irresistible jail-house feeling" Same issue here. Hence eliminate

Hence sounds the best to me

An entrepreneur who recently purchased, overlooking a quaint eastern German village, the Schloss Hoheneck prison, plans to convert it into a hotel where customers will pay over US$100 per night to sleep on a hard bed, eat poor-quality food, and experience what he calls that "irresistible jail-house feeling" Misplaced modifier again - overlooking... is modifying entrepreneur

An entrepreneur, having recently purchased the Schloss Hoheneck prison, overlooking a quaint eastern German village, plans to convert it into a hotel where customers will pay over US$100 per night to sleep on a hard bed, eat poor-quality food, and experience what he calls that "irresistible jail-house feeling" The modifier is fine, but the problem is what is it referring to? Pronoun ambiguity.

Hence ans C

An enterpreneur must do the ACTION of OVERLOOKING.
How can a Prison do "overlook" something?
Please clarify.

Hi imskpwr,

The author wants to convey that there is a prison called Schloss Hoheneck prison that overlooks a quaint eastern German village.

If it is the entrepreneur who's overlooking, then the sentence would mean - he overlooked a german village i.e., he ignored it.

If it is the prison that's overlooking, the the sentence would mean - the prison rises over the village. That would be what the author wanted to mean.
Hence D is not the ans.

Hope it helps.

Hi,
Sorry but I feel the opening phrase should modify the entrepreneur instead of prison.

Entrepreneur overlooked the quaint eastern German village and still purchased the prison..

Experts please explain.

What is the OA?

aaggar7, I think you are confused by the meaning of 'overlook'. :)
This word can be used in 3 contexts:
In my haste to find a suitable candidate, I overlooked the gaps in his profile.
Here, 'overlook' means 'fail to notice'.

Now take this example:
The apartment overlooked the waterfront.
Here, 'overlook' means that the apartment had 'a view of'

'overlook' can also be used as a noun:
The hill was a great overlook from where one could get a panoramic view of the surroundings.

In this question, the 2nd meaning is relevant: the Schloss Hoheneck prison overlooks the quaint eastern German village. The sentence deals with the location of the prison and not the entrepreneur failing to notice anything.

I hope the confusion is cleared.
