It is a special feature of cell aggregation if the developing nervous system that in most regions of the brain the cells not only adhere to one another and also adopt some preferential orientation.
A. to one another and also adopt
B. one to the other, and also they adopt
C. one to the other , but also adopting
D. to one another but also adopt
E. to each other , also adopting

X and Y should be parallel

not clear about your confusion not only is in non underline part and the correct ans has to use but also only C and D does that but c is not llel( adhere vs adopting)
D corrects that and is the ans

I infer, from your question, that you want to see not only X but also Y in underlined portion. Actually you have not only in non-underlined portion, check below in red. D is correct here.
