It has to be E because the rest have misplaced Noun Modifiers
A has article the in front of ailing mobster , so it must be referring to someone . In E , the godfather is the character the term mobster refers to

I think C is the correct answer. The comparison is simply between A & C. According to..., a subject should be placed here to lead the whole sentence. Therefore, B, D, E can be eliminated.

A: modifier is ambiguous.

A: modifier is ambiguous.
You have misunderstood the ``according to ... `` phrase . its not a present participle -ing .
This is different .

E: changes the original meaning. Zeta in original sentence is in a phrase, in E, it is the subject.

so what are u saying
E is wrong because it changes the meaning or is E wrong because the opening modifiers requires a subject , cos in your first post you mentioned the latter

The answer should be C.

According to Italy's top anti-Mafia prosecutor, the ailing mobster came to take refuge in zeta, a town famous because of the "The Godfather" and near to those he most trusted.

A- the ailing mobster came to take refuge in zeta, a town famous because of "The Godfather" and near to those he most trusted. - mobster is famous because of Godfather not the town

B- famous because of "The Godfather," the ailing mobster came to take refuge in zeta, a town near to those he most trusted. - the position of 'famous' is wrong and others

C- the ailing mobster, famous because of "The Godfather," came to take refuge in zeta, a town near to those he most trusted.

D- near to those he most trusted, the ailing mobster came to take refuge in zeta, a town famous because of "The Godfather".
