GMAT score lower than expected/hoped

by csidd7 » Sat Sep 17, 2011 1:21 pm
Hey Guys,

Just looking to vent, get some advice, etc.. I just took the test for the second time today and scored a 670 just 10 points above my first effort of 660 which was like 2 years ago. First time around I used primarly OG and Kaplan with a little Princeton review and this time around I used just OG and Manhattan. I studied a lot the last 3 weeks leading up to the exam but not too much before that or at least not consistent studying. I also took several practice tests the last two weeks on Manhattan and GMATPrep, scoring as follows:

Mahattan
Test 1 - 47Q 38V 700
Test 2 - 44Q 45V 720
Test 3 - 41Q (only did Q because felt terrible about how I was doing on it)
Test 4 - 42Q 39V 670
Test 5 - 46Q (only did Q because also felt terrible but did ok)
GMAT PREP
Test 1 - 49Q 41V 720
Test 2 - 47Q 40V 710

Actual GMAT
42Q 59% 40V 89% 670 84%

I was very dissapointed to say the least in the results. My goal was 700+ and based on my practice tests I thought I should be able to hit that. I am most disappointed in my Quant and don't understand how I can score a 49 and 47 on the GMAT Prep but then only a 42 on the actual GMAT. When I take the practice tests I notice that there aren't many problems I don't know how to solve but I make careless mistakes.

Today's test was frustrating because I felt the first quant question was surprisingly hard, not in that it was difficult conceptually but was a very time consuming and not an overall easy question so it took me over 4 min and kind of threw me off in somewhat of a panic. However I thought I recovered well, I was able to finish without any guessing as was expecting a higher score than I got.

Anyways I don't know if I should give up or try again. Like I said my target is 700+ (would like to score at least high 40's in quant and at least low-mid 40s on Verbal) and my school target is Duke. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Test anxiety or even just a little bad luck might have played its part.
You will have to figure what it was. Did you give your practice tests with the AWA's because that makes a difference as well.

Figure out what it was and decide for urself. I personally think you can improve and should take it again. You had a bad quant day by your standards. So go ahead one more time. Don't let thr be too much of a gap. Prepare for a month like crazy and give it!!

I hope it helps!!
Please press "thanks" if you think my post has helped you.. Cheers!!
