This is an elliptical expression, equivalent to "As [s/he did] in the previous case, the judge took an early break".

Mhh but then what about this one:

Squiggly throws like a raccoon

Here you, could also say that it is an elliptical expression: Squiggly throws as a raccoon [does]


Or am I wrong?
