Hi,

I have done my BTech in Electronics Engineering from IIT Guwahati (one of the most reputed colleges in India). I am having a good academic record with a CPI of 9 out of 10(Department Rank 3). I have been working as a Design Engineer at NVIDIA Graphics (famous chip design company) in Bangalore for the past 2 years. I will have complete 3 years experience by next year. My GMAT score is 700 (51 Q, 34 V, 5 AWA). Also i am member of the rotary club and have done some community service.

I am aiming for entrepreneurship in future (with some couple of years of experience after my MBA)

Can you please suggest that which colleges can i aim at in United States.

Dear anshul.iitg,

I think you will get into a good MBA program, but you need to do some research first on which ones best fit your career goals. I would encourage you to visit our sticky on school selection for some tips on evaluating programs. Once you have a list of schools that will best prepare you for your future career, then you can filter the list into which schools are a reach and which are safety programs. Generally speaking, your reach schools will be those with GMAT averages at or above 700, and safety schools will have GMAT averages below 670. Regardless of where you apply, it will be important for you to distinguish yourself from the other applicants from India with IT backgrounds.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks for the reply.

I understand that there is a large pool of applicants from India with IT background. But when you say that it is necessary to distinguish myself from them, then you are talking about the professional experience or something else. Can you add on that what the schools look for in terms of uniqueness. It would be good if you could explain with an example..

Thanks in advance..

It could be professional or personal, whatever will be memorable in a positive way. Perhaps you have traveled somewhere remote or have a rare skill/hobby you can write about? Have you been more of a manager in your job than a technical person? What is unique will vary from person to person but it is that thing that makes others want to get to know you.

Lisa

My uniqueness

by anshul.iitg » Thu Sep 11, 2008 8:07 pm
Most of my job had been on the technical side only but i have lead a team of 4 people and was a mentor of some of them. I have global working experience. I work in close contact with people around the globe like US and Taiwan. I have traveled to US twice before.

I have a hobby of teaching and talking to people. Since my college days i have held many counseling sessions for my juniors about their problems related to career and academics. Also i have been part of lot of organizations involved in community service.

Will all this be counted unique or do i need to think more to distinguish myself.

I think there could be something in there, but I encourage you to identify one specific example of each of these things that you could use in an essay.
