Olympic Games

by amirhakimi » Mon Nov 11, 2013 5:59 am
The Olympic Games helped to keep peace among the pugnacious states of the Greek world in that a sacred truce was proclaimed during the festival's month.

(A) world in that a sacred truce was proclaimed during the festival's month
(B) world, proclaiming a sacred truce during the festival's month
(C) world when they proclaimed a sacred truce for the festival month
(D) world, for a sacred truce was proclaimed during the month of the festival
(E) world by proclamation of a sacred truce that was for the month of the festival

Answer is D

Here is how I'll deal with this problem:

Festival's month is not right use of possessive here since festival is not a living thing. Noticing this, we can cross out A,B, and C.

E is wordy by using a noun when D uses a verb to convey the same information. So, answer choice D is indeed the right answer.

The SC is starting to make sense to me finally :D
Sincerely,
Amir,

I have a problem with answer D and the use of "for".
I choose E as an answer.
Could anyone explain why E is not a good choice please?

The structure of this sentence is - (Effect) Because (Cause)

The Olympic Games helped to keep peace among the pugnacious states of the Greek world, (Effect) for (because) a sacred truce was proclaimed during the month of the festival (cause)

helped to keep peace, for/because truce was proclaimed

The use of ''FOR'' is correct, it is used as a synonym of ''because''

As for E its just too wordy...Not required

Always prefer the verb over noun (if it does not change the meaning and other factors)...verb are more direct and active.

I hope it helps

Thanks
